Activities We Do
General Information
Today the club offers sports enthusiasts and families the chance to enjoy
the outdoors year round. The Schenectady Wintersports Club, the Northern
New York Paddlers and the Mohawk Valley Hiking Club are family oriented clubs located in New York State's
Capital District. During the winter months, many special skiing days are
planned. SWC has recently rejoined the New York Capital District Ski Council
racing program which provides recreational giant slalom racing at various
major ski resorts in Vermont and New York State. During the warmer months of
the year, hiking, biking, and canoeing activities are planned for minimal
cost to members.
Meetings
The SWC-NNYP-MVHC meet every other week during September through November and January through April.
Our meetings are held at the Ancient Order of the Hibernian Hall at 1748 State Street in Schenectady NY.
Meetings include a social hour, a short business meeting, and a special presentation.
The meetings allow our members to share information on current activities and coming events.
The special presentations cover a wide range of subjects from new equipment &
techniques to talks on member trips (down hill skiing in the Alps, cross-country skiing in Norway,
around the world biking, canoeing in Guinea and Canada, and safaris in Africa).
Skiing
As long as there is snow on the ground someplace, the club members are skiing.
SWC is a member of the New York Capital District Ski Council and
SWCers race in Council Giant Slalom events (no death defying speeds, just good competition and fun),
and special Council days when significant discounts are available for skiing at
major Ski Resorts in Vermont and New York. Other skiing discounts are also available.
Many SWCers cross-country and back country ski. Almost any weekend will find SWCers at the local
cross-country facilities or off in the woods blazing a trail to find the best snow conditions
in the Adirondacks.
Canoeing
Every Monday night from May through September,
the NNYP provides canoe instruction and recreational paddling on the Mohawk River.
Instruction is provided by experienced paddlers at all levels of ability -
from basic skills to racing techniques. NNYP members race in events throughout the northeast
and beyond. Special flat water and white water trips are also undertaken.
Trips include short ventures on the local waters to week long wilderness excursions.
NNYP sponsors two races, the Towpath Regatta (a race open to all - a just for fun event in June)
and the Electric City Regatta (a slightly more serious event in July).
Biking
Every Thursday evening from May through August, there is an organized bike ride.
Each ride is sponsored by a cub member and will consist of varying length tours
starting at the sponsoring members house or other convenient location.
All participate; kids and high speed endurance riders. The length of rides varies from about
5 miles to the more ambitious 25 mile tours.
