Notes from the President

The work at the Clubhouse continues with many items checked off the list of deficiencies. As previously noted, there will be challenges through out the ski season with various contractors working in the Clubhouse. There are also a couple of areas that will be unusable, for a period of time, and are clearly noted. All Board members have contributed many hours of work and effort to complete the remediations. Additionally, members Tony Galvagno and Steve Dudka have been on site and have worked on the design and implementation of improved safety features. I appreciate and thank them all.

The ski season has begun and the reservations are filling at a fast pace. One of the improved  Clubhouse areas is the refreshed drying room. Located in the basement, it is now bright clean and fully functional with hanging racks, shelving for boots and clothing articles. It’s large enough to accommodate every one’s  outdoor clothing in one space.

There has been interest indicated for nordic skiing and snowshoeing. We currently have a Board vacancy for the position of Nordic Chair. If you’re at all interested in supporting your Club by volunteering I would ask that you speak with me or Activities VP Bill Romania. Either one of us would be happy to speak about the position and offer support to anyone willing to assist.

Happy holiday season to all,

Karen

Volunteer!

Help Keep 90+ Years of Tradition Alive!

SWC isn't just about skiing, it's also about community.  From the Slopes to the Socials, we've always been powered by members who pitch in and make it all happen.  Join the fun by Volunteering.

It's become clear that if we want to have more Nordic events--either around the Capital District or near Stowe--we will need a Nordic director, or even better, a Nordic committee to organize them.

If you are interested, please email Bill Romania

The Clubhouse: Door Codes

A Letter from the SWC Volunteer Front....

Dear Reader,

Some gentle reminders related to booking and using the clubhouse:

1. The pre-arrival email with the door code is sent after you fill out the guest agreement.

2. The pre-arrival email generally goes out 2 days prior to arrival.  There are other workflow rules in place in case you wait until the last minute to book a room. The LAST same day rule kicks off pre-arrival emails at 5 PM.

3. If you book a same-day room after 5 PM and expect to get a door code, please plan to sleep in your car that night.

4. When using the door code, press the Yale button first, then the code and finally the checkmark.

5. If you have a problem with the door code, DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER, TEXT THE NUMBER 802-585-3830 so that multiple volunteers are aware and can respond.

6. When you get to the house, stay in the room listed in your booking!  You are not Goldilocks testing out different beds and rooms. Do not switch with anyone etc. etc. You do not have visibility into all of the room assignments for the week, and will cause havoc during busy season.

7. Read the User Guide! It explains how to modify your own booking. Modify means you can change your arrival and/or departure date, or whether there are additional members staying with you. You can make a change up to the day before arrival.

8. Make sure you consistently use the same email when making a booking!  Your email is how the booking engine tracks existing reservations, so that you can see them and make changes.

Snow Tires or All-Seasons

By Bill Romania

This was a topic of discussion at the October work weekend and I was not surprised to hear that several regular skiers rely upon all-seasons and several rely upon snow tires. I thought it would be worthwhile to dig into the relevant difference so that members can make a more informed decision. I’m intentionally not addressing truck tires, mostly because I know nothing about them...read more

SWC Swag!

You asked and we delivered.

The Schenectady Wintersports Club has officially opened a merchandise store for members.  Please take a look.  There are 15 items to start.  Your feed back is critical for expanding the store.  Ordering instructions are on the SWC webpage.  You can pick up the items in Ballston Spa or have them delivered for an addition charge.

Any suggestions or items for consideration, please  contact Rick Cobello

The holiday season kicked off with a very successful Thanksgiving morning hike to the delicious  pancake breakfast at Christman’s Sanctuary. The weather was perfect, the breakfast was ample and the attendance was large at the 96th annual event, which was again hosted by Jim, Kim, Michael and Michaela Schaefer. This year even included a 3 person swim under the falls. That, I suspect, is a first and was a unique end to the event. I was able to complete a bit of trail cleaning prior to the breakfast and look forward to joining with the assigned steward to continue improvements to the area. If you enjoy being in the woods and hiking on trails, anywhere, I encourage you to volunteer with the entity maintaining those trails. It’s a productive and rewarding way to enjoy the out of doors.

Wishing you all a happy holiday season,

Bill
