The origin and growth of SWC over the decades is an impressive history, but not exclusive in its impact with those enjoying life out of doors. Other, long standing, organizations have been birthed by individuals who have been a part of SWC. Lloyd Lambert, for the meager sum of $1.98, purchased his first pair of skis in 1915. He was also one of the early Snow Train riders from Schenectady to North Creek in the 1930s (see the SWC connection?). He was employed as a display manager for a department store chain in Schenectady, but his passion was skiing. He was president of the Alpine Ski Club and joined the National Ski Patrol. He volunteered to conduct search and rescue missions for downed planes, in the area, during WWII. He wrote weekly ski columns for the Schenectady Gazette for 27 years and in 1948 began broadcasting ski reports and interviews on radio. He organized the New York Capital District Ski Council (SWC is a member of the Council), served on the board of directors of the U.S. Eastern Amateur Ski Association and was a charter member of the Eastern Ski Writers Association. He developed a ski museum at Hunter Mountain with ski equipment that included a pair of skis dating to 1750 (also on view at that museum were the skis Henry Anderson made for Freddie as a wedding gift). In 1977 Lloyd founded the 70+ Ski Club as a result of his dismay that seniors were giving up the sport because they could no longer afford to ski on fixed incomes or they had no one to ski with. Fast forward to today and the Club is known as the oldest and largest club of its kind with Lloyd’s grandson Richard Lambert leading senior trips around the world. Richard is also the publisher of Senior Skiing, an online magazine promoting an outdoor oriented lifestyle. Why do I write of this you ask. Our own Bill Schaefer is a 70+ member ( I think Jim Schaefer is an 80+ member). As a result of that connection SWC has inherited Lloyd Lambert’s library of ski related books. The range is from PSIA 1964 ski technique to Why We Ski, a collection of poems, and everything in between. This donation was made by Lloyd’s grandson Richard and will be at home at the SWC Clubhouse for everyone to enjoy. I’ll be investigating the 70+ Club since it sounds very interesting and (I can’t believe it) I meet the qualifications. My best to all, Karen

The Clubhouse: Door Codes
|
|
|
If you have a problem with the door code, please DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER, TEXT THE NUMBER 802-585-3830 so that multiple volunteers are aware and can respond. Please use this code ONLY for door code issues as those of us who monitor this text number stop whatever we are doing when we hear the ping - be it skiing, hiking, biking - to open our phones, read the text and respond.

We are going to Chamonix France Feb 28th. Trip leader is Cheryl Brodowski. This will be a fantastic trip at one of the premier ski resorts in Chamonix for skiing and entertainment.
We have trips planned to Switzerland, Telluride and Sunday River in 2027. We have dates for Telluride and Sunday River and we are finalizing the date for Switzerland. We need new trip leaders! With my other travel, it is difficult to lead multiple trips around the globe. All trips will have all planning and logistics completed. All you need to do is go on the trip and be the point of contact and maybe host a dinner. All Planning and finances is handled by Sports America Tours. They are a fantastic organization who provides exceptionalcustomer service.

A Couple of Suggestions For Winter Hiking
Thatcher Park is open with miles of trails and panoramic views. The Landis Arboretum is another option which is open from dawn to dusk every day and offers trails through old growth forest and open fields
A quick google search is all that is needed to find more details and other options to enjoy the out of doors near home and free of charge. Every season here in the beautiful NE provides it’s own beauty and winter is one of the best.
