Notes From the President by Karen Simmons
Last night we returned home from a weekend at the Clubhouse. It was billed as a “Leaf Peepers” weekend, but I must admit the leaves this year are not as spectacular as previous years. What was spectacular was the time spent with other members. Some, like ourselves, who have been members for many years and some who were at the Clubhouse for the first time. The weather was perfect and it seems that “Leaf Peepers” has been resurrected and will be on the hosted calendar going forward.
Speaking of the Hosting Calendar…..October 24-October 27 there will be a first ever train the host weekend. Hosting through the Spring, Fall and Winter seasons is a large part of our Club. It takes many members to make all of the hosted weekends possible, so this is a very important event and a great way to get involved. The greatest benefit of hosting is meeting members one may not otherwise meet. Thank you to everyone who is attending the weekend and thank you, as well, for the weekends that will be made possible as a result of your efforts.
Another opportunity to support our Club is the November 2-3 2024 ADK Winter Expo. This is a large outdoor show which will be held at the Albany Capital Center 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. Message me if you’re available 1-5 on Saturday or 10-2 on Sunday. This show is an opportunity for us to talk about SWC and share our amazing history.
Another opportunity to volunteer is during the Clubhouse Fall Work Weekend November 07-November 10. With or without technical skills there is a job for you.
I look forward to meeting and working with you at an upcoming event.
Karen

Ski Boots: How to get the most out of the boots you have.
By Bill Romania
The last part of this article got lost into cyberspace in the September Newsletter. A reprint of the full article is here.
Your ski boots are arguably the most important piece of equipment in the ski-binding-boot triumvirate because they link you and your movement, thru the binding and ski, to the mountain and vice versa. They also have to fit both you and your bindings....read more

Monday Night Paddling Ends for the Season
By Kim Greiner
Monday Night Paddling was well-attended from May to September at Kiwanis Park. A faithful number of SWC/NNYP members assisted several newbies with safety, boarding and exiting their watercrafts, as well as instruction to gain skills and enhance their paddling experience. Some new paddlers brought their own vessels. One even had a fold up/snap together kayak. Very cool! For those who did not have access, Ed and Kim brought a trailer load of boats, paddles, and PFDs each week. We are most proud of the accomplishments of one family and a mother-daughter team. Of course, in true SWC style, we enjoyed camaraderie and snacks afterwards. I hope more members will join us next year for an evening of fun!

MVHC President's Column
By Bill Simmons
Member John Rack invested many years as the President of the Mohawk Valley Hiking Club. Under his leadership the Hiking Club had it’s own newsletter and a very active group who regularly hiked together. How do I know this? John hosted a picnic at Kiwanis Park a couple of weeks ago and I met many of these hikers. Lively group that share memories of their excursions of years past, even if they don’t venture very far on the trails any more.
Work is still continuing on the extension of the Northern terminus of The Long Path into the village of Altamont. Groups of volunteers under the direction of Steve Seigard will have the steps completed leading off the escarpment to a kiosk in Orsini Park very soon. There are Fall hikes planned by the Long Path North Club, which I’ll be able to expand on next month.
Enjoy your time on a trail, whether cleaning it for other hikers, or just taking in the quiet of a walk in the woods.
