President's Column

Karen and I are looking very much forward to enjoying the Bald Mountain hike on Saturday August 3rd. This is a 4-5 mile hike near Stamford NY with Russell Hanford from the Long Path North Club as the leader. Weather forecast is favorable, and with many farm stands and cafes in the area to enjoy following the hike it looks to be a good day.
Much of my hiking is with a chain saw and lopers to clear trails for others to enjoy. I recently spent a way too hot day doing just that to extend the current Long Path northern terminus from it’s current location in Thatcher Park down the escarpment into the village of Altamont. Much work is still to be completed by a very dedicated group of volunteers and will end with a kiosk in the village. It was the original dream of creator Vince Schaefer that the Path should extend into the Adirondacks; so we’re making progress.
