Work Weekend Fall 2026

Members Make Ready

Way back in 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, Schenectady Wintersports Club was founded on the concept of creating affordable skiing opportunities for everyone. In 1971 that grew to include the purchase and rehabilitation of a large white 1850’s house in Waterbury Center Vermont to support the many members who frequented northern Vermont ski areas, providing lodging at an affordable price.

SWC Clubhouse ownership has continued for over 50 years because members volunteer their time and resources to maintain and improve, operate and promote, a very unique club asset. October 15-18, 2026 fourteen members, evenly split between relatively new and well seasoned, continued that tradition of selfless service to our total membership.

Mother nature, dressed in her full autumn colors under bright sunshine, white fluffy clouds, and brilliant blue skies, greeted the volunteers in Vermont.  Entering the empty Clubhouse, it was equally impressive how clean and neat the housekeeping members had maintained through the summer. This sort of caring is important to Clubhouse success.

The volunteers worked between 1 and 4 days, earning 1 night gift certificate for each day of work.  All were industrious participants with tasks ranging from carpentry to painting to cleaning, making the house ready for the busy winter season to come.

The attic rooms have had a total face lift with trim installed, walls and floors painted.  The back door was replaced and a new lockset installed. A second handrail was added to the driveway entrance. A smoke valance was added to the ceiling between the kitchen and the dining room.

Historical pictures commemorating the important role of SWC in developing skiing in the east were rehung.  The new tongue and groove entryway ceiling got two coats of clear poly.  Room 21 received a much needed cleanup.  Many rooms and halls received touchups.  And numerous doors benefit from a fresh coat of paint.

All the bedroom floors have been mopped.  Inside of windows cleaned.  Storm windows dropped.  A special note: a good number of the old aluminum storms have fallen apart and had to be removed.  The bathrooms were scrubbed and the caulk in the men’s showers replaced. Furnace filters replaced and dehumidifiers cleaned.  Paper goods supplies restored.

There are many more details which could be noted and many more tasks left undone.  As we approach our Club centennial, we can all be proud in the efforts of the 14 who gave their time to a club operated by members, maintained by members, for the benefits of all members.
